Sharon Sherwood, President

Sharon Sherwood was elected to the Platte County R-3 Board of Education in April of 2008. Her love for children and what is best for them, coupled with her background in education, led to her interest in becoming a member of the Board of Education. She is a retired elementary principal, first serving 13 years as an elementary music teacher, then serving as principal for two years in the Mound City School District and nine years in the Smithville R-2 School District.
She is a graduate of Platte County R-3, having earned her bachelor's degree in Music Education K-12 from the University of Missouri, a master's degree in Music Education from NWMSU, and an educational specialist degree in Elementary School Administration from NWMSU. Sharon has earned the Certified Board Member Designation, the Advanced Certification Award, and the Master Certification Award, awarded by the Missouri School Board Association.
Sharon and her husband Harold have three children, two daughters-in-law, one son-in-law, and six grandchildren. Three of the grandchildren are students in the Platte County R-3 School District. She loves spending quality time with her grandchildren, reading and learning with them, and attending their various activities. Sharon serves as the Board of Education liaison to the district Professional Development Committee as well as on the Northland Career Center Advisory Board.
Sharon feels that it is her responsibility to be a good steward of the taxpayers' money, particularly in difficult economic times, making decisions that are reflective of the district's most critical needs. As she looks to the future, she believes it's imperative to maintain high academic excellence in high quality, safe facilities; retain and hire excellent teachers; address district growth; and encourage parent involvement in the education of their children.
Adam McGinness, Vice President

Adam has been a member of the Platte County community for over 40 years. After graduating from Platte County R-3 High School, Adam attended the University Missouri-Columbia where he earned his Bachelor of Science in Consumer & Family Economics with a Minor in Economics.
He was elected to the Board of Education in April 2010 and currently serves as Vice President. Adam serves on the district's Technology Committee, Fraud & Audit Committee, and the Student Health Advisory Committee (SHAC) and previously served as a board member of the Cooperating School Districts of Greater Kansas City.
Education runs deep in Adam's blood. His mother was an educator for more than 30 years before recently retiring from the Platte County R-3 School District. His father served as a PCR-3 Board of Education member in the 1980s. Adam's wife, Kim, is a preschool instructor at Great Beginnings Preschool here in the PCR-3 district. Adam and Kim have two children, Cade (attends Platte County High School), and Cali (attends Siegrist Elementary).
Adam was employed as Vice President of Wells Bank of Platte City for seven years before he embarked on other journeys in his career. He currently serves as Executive Team Lead of Assets Protection with Target Corporation in addition to enjoying the work he puts in to his travel business.
Very active within the community, Adam services as the Lay Leader of the Platte City Methodist Church and is also involved in the area Chamber of Commerce and Platte County Eleemosynary Society.
Adam is honored to represent the Platte County R-3 School District patrons as a member of the Board of Education. He realizes the entire community (parents, students, business partners, etc.) contributes to the District's success and, thus, understands the importance of the continuation to achieve outstanding results while being careful stewards of the taxpayer's money.
Lenora Miles, Member

Being on the
school board for six years, Lenora has learned that a school board member’s
responsibility is for the long-term success of the school district. The first area of responsibility refers to
policy making, the second is responsibility including approving and monitoring
the budget, and the third is ensuring that the best personnel are hired. During her tenure on the Board of Education she has learned the importance of working as a team member with mutual respect for others and collaboration with others is essential. Lenora
serves on the Education Foundation Committee, Legislative Committee, and Public Relations Committee. She has
earned her Advanced Board Member Certification, Master Board Member
Certification, and is working toward her Distinguished Board Member
Certification, as awarded by the Missouri School Boards Association.
After teaching for 20 years at Platte County High School, Lenora is now teaching part-time at West Platte School District. Since she is on her 38th year of teaching, She understands the perspectives of the school board, the teachers, and the students. Additionally, Lenora also works part-time at Dan Demory
State Farm Insurance.
Northwest Missouri State University, Lenora received her Bachelor of Science
degree in Secondary Education with a major in English and a minor in Library
Science. She earned her master's degree in Secondary Education.

second son Darin has two children, Lindsay and Cooper, who both attend PCR-3.
Her third son Jeff, has one daughter Ashli, who also attends school at Platte
Julie Vanover, Member

Julie became interested in serving on the school board as a result of various volunteer activities in the schools. She has served on the Public Relations Committee, Student Health Advisory Committee, CSIP (Comprehensive School Improvement Plan) Committee, and Calendar Committee for Platte County R-3. She has been involved with PTA since her children entered school and served as PTA President for two years.
Julie grew up in St. Joseph and graduated from the University of Missouri-Columbia with a Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy. Recently she earned an MBA with a concentration in Healthcare Leadership from Rockhurst University. Julie is currently employed as a physical therapist for St. Luke’s Homecare.
Julie and her fellow MU Tiger husband Joe have lived in Platte City more than 11 years. They have two children in the District, Alex and Lindsay. Many of Julie's volunteer activities have been with the schools, as well as her church, First Christian Church of Platte City, where she sings in the church choir.
Julie wants each student to reach their maximum potential. She hopes to continue to accommodate for district growth, maintain acceptable class sizes, advance student achievement (including technology use), and support parent involvement, while maintaining fiscal responsibility.
Lori Bogart, Member

Lori was elected to the Platte County R-3 School Board in 2012. She is currently representing the School Board as a member of the Pirates R.O.C.K. Committee and has participated in a variety of other workshops and committees while on the Board.
Lori grew up in a small community in Iowa and graduated from Northwest Missouri State University with a degree in Human Resources. While her kids were in elementary school, she made time to get more involved in the school community. She wanted to really get to know the other kids at the school and become familiar with the staff and administration. She held various positions within elementary, middle school, and high school PTA. She was actively involved in the Music Parents Association and what is formerly known as the YouthFriends program. Each of these roles has helped her understand and appreciate the value of a strong school program, high achieving administrative teams and creative, caring educators. She has also worked in the District as a substitute teacher, providing her with valuable insight into the every day work involved in the classrooms.
Lori and her husband Jeff have lived in this school district for more than 20 years. Their children attended Barry School kindergarten through 8th grade. Their son Bryce now attends the University of Missouri and their daughter Lindsey attends Missouri State University. Lori is currently employed as the Director of Administration and Human Resources at Platte Woods United Methodist Church.
Lori sought election to the school board because she has an interest in helping our District maintain its current level of success as it continues to grow and prosper in the coming years. She hopes to help the District move forward by staying involved, understanding the issues facing the District and working in positive ways to deal with our District's future growth and change.
Gary Brown, Member

Gary is a lifelong resident of Platte County and a 1985 graduate of the Platte County R-3 High School. He has a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from Northwest Missouri State University and a Master of Business Administration from Rockhurst College. Today, he is Superintendent of Air Quality Control Systems and Fuels for Kansas City Power & Light at the Iatan Generating Station.
Prior to joining the Board of Education, Gary served on phase 1 of the Citizen's Advisory Committee to the board and continued as a BOE representative on the phase 2 committee after his election. He is also active in the local Boy Scout Troop as an Assistant Scoutmaster, and in the First Christian Church of Platte City where he is the Education Committee chair and a substitute HS Sunday school teacher.
Gary lives on a small farm in rural Platte County with his wife, Cathy, and two children. He is proud of the PCR3 traditions and appreciates the chance to contribute to a system that served him well.
Steve Goettling, Member

Steve Goettling was elected to the Platte County Board of Education in April 2015. He and his family – wife, Donna and son, Cade (PCHS Pirate – Class of 2017) – have resided within the Platte County R-3 School District boundaries since 2003. For seven years, Steve and his family resided in our southern attendance area and, for the past five years, they have resided in Platte City.
Growing up in Higginsville, Missouri, Steve attended Lafayette County High School as a young man. He attended William Jewell College and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business/Management. Steve has been employed with KCI Auto Auction since 2002 and acts as Assistant General Manager-Business. Steve’s interest in the youth of our community is exhibited by his participation in the Platte County Youth Football League. A four-year president and six-year board member of that organization, he is still involved as a volunteer coach.
Steve earned his Certified Board Member designation in May 2015 and currently serves on the PCR3 Fraud & Audit Committee. He looks forward to the responsibilities involved with representing our great community as a member of the Board of Education, especially as the school district continues to evolve and grow. Helping our students reach their full potential is the light that will guide his path while serving the Platte County R-3 School District students, families, staff, and patrons.
