Student Teaching

Platte County School District is pleased to cooperate with many area colleges and universities in classroom observation and student teaching/internship programs. We feel that these preparatory experiences are extremely important in the "real world" development of future teachers. With this belief as a foundation, the following steps/procedures have been established so that the college students and cooperating PCSD teachers can provide the best developmental experience possible.

Steps to Student Teach at PCR-3

Requests to student teach in the district are only accepted from a sponsoring university/college. Student teachers are asked not to contact individual teachers or building administrators to obtain information for a student teaching placement.

Process

  • Fall session deadline: April 15
  • Spring session deadline: October 15

Initial request for all student teaching placement are made by college placement officials to the Human Resources Department

  • Candidates should have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or above
  • Grades in the core areas or area of certification/specialty at a B or above
  • Student teaching candidates are then required to meet with Human Resources so that placement and experience options can be examined.
  • If a suitable placement can be made, Human Resources and Academic Services will communicate with building-level administration to secure an appropriate cooperative teacher assignment.
  • The placing college or university is then notified of the placement.
  • Necessary documentation of this process includes a written document from the college/university-stating placement information of specified individual college students by name, college expectations of the experience, and the duration of the experience which includes specified calendar dates.
  • College students working directly with PCSD students will require an FBI background check. Arrangements for an FBI background check can be made through the placing college/university.
  • Behavior during the student teaching experience should aligns with staff expectations as outlined in the PCSD Schools Board of Education policy GHB.

The following materials, in conjunction with any forms required by the sponsoring university/college, are required to be submitted to PCSD Schools:

  • Philosophy of Education
  • Official transcripts from sponsoring university/college
  • Desired grade level and content level if one is not contained in the university/college student teaching materials.

Participation in the Co-Teach model for student teaching is required.

Classroom Observations

The placement of college students for the purposes of classroom observation is an agreement made by the college/university placement official(s) or instructor(s) and the building level principal. Necessary documentation of this process includes a written document from the college/university-stating the purpose of the observation, requesting placement information of specified individual college students by name, and the duration of the observation which include dates and times. Since this is only an observation and no college students will work directly with PCSD students, an FBI or local background check of the college student is not necessary.
